Double Digits

There is still time to enter my current give-away
of one copy of 24 Hours Is All You Get!

As I type this there are two very excited boys jumping on my bed and yelling,

"TOY STORY T-H-R-E-E!!!"

Toy Story 2 was one of their favorite movies when they looked like this....

Orville, 23 months

The Birthday Boy, Wilbur, 10 months

Orville was almost 2 years old at the time, and his favorite word was two.  He said it all. the. time.

Wilbur, who was almost one at the time, would sit on the couch beside his brother and clap and squeal when I would put in their favorite video.  Then he would jump up and down and say, "Ay!  Doody Time!  Doody Time!"

Doody was one-year-old speak for Woody.

Just thought I should clear that up for you.

Then as the title would appear on screen one word at a time, both boys would shout in sync with the graphic...

DOY

DOY

T-W-O-O-O-O-O-O!

Today, sweet Wilbur turns 10, and he looks like this....

Wilbur constructs "water works"
at the beach at the Isle of Palms
while on vacation in SC.
July, 2010

The Pixar people were kind enough to release Toy Story 3 to DVD on his birthday, and that is his birthday treat today.

That and an entire package of Oreos.

There is much rejoicing in the land.

So, if you'll please excuse me, it's Doody Time!  I'm off to have a good cry and avoid the Oreos.

Blessings,
Dawn

Wilbur's 10th Birthday pARTy: The Fun!

After the cake...

and treats...

and activities...

Wilbur opened his presents.

He received a huge assortment of art supplies,
including watercolors,
a sketch kit, clay, paints and brushes,
and a book on how to draw birds.

His birding buddies gave him a Webkinz and a plush toy owl.

He found some money in a card, too,
which he used to buy more Webkinz
and a pottery wheel (grumble, grumble, grrr).

However, the best part of all...

was the good time he had...

with his sweet (and sometimes funny) friends!

Happy early birthday, Wilbur!
I hope you enjoyed your pARTy!

Nostalgia: Looking Back While Moving Forward

We will begin the 2010-2011 school year in two weeks.  This is a landmark year for us because Orville begins middle school . . .

a step forward which makes me want to go back.

I want to go back to when I could hold him in my arms  His baby pictures make me cry.

I want to go back to when his little hand fit just inside mine.  I have to remind myself often that I do not need to hold it while walking in a parking lot any more.

I want to go back to the days of snuggling on the couch while watching Blues Clues.  I am learning not to give him big, slobbery kisses in front of his friends or call him names like "Boo Bear" and "Mommy's Binky Boy".

It's sad.  I know.  But I am growing right along side him, learning to be the mother he needs for each season of his life.  By God's grace, I am letting go a little at a time and moving forward in faith.

I know I can't go back. but, as I proceed, I can take a little time to look back and remember those sweet days.  In fact, I have been putting together a portfolio of Orville's elementary school work and am creating movies to include in it from video footage filmed over the past six years.

For the next two or three weeks, I will not have much time for writing because I have begun a part-time, temporary job teaching English to Korean children who live in our town.  We will also start our new year of homeschool in two weeks, and in mid-August, our homeschool association will hold its annual "kick-off" meeting.  I am responsible for coordinating this meeting.  Plus, we are having a big birthday party for Wilbur's 10th birthday before school starts!

I had to breathe into a brown paper bag as I typed that all out and I know my time in the blogosphere will be limited until mid-August.  Until then, I plan to share the movies I am making so I won't have to put Olive Plants into hybernation.

So, as I look forward to a new year of new responsibilities, please join me as I take a look back.  In a few weeks, I will be back to journaling our school days and sharing teaching tips.  Until then, please enjoy this new segment called Nostalgia.

For those of you who knew my babies back when they were actually babies, feel free to have a good cry as you watch them grow before your eyes.  I sure have.

You can laugh too 'cause they were hysterical little people!

Here is the first Nostalgia video of Orville and Wilbur when they were in Kindergarten and pre-school.

Please excuse them.  They were still learning manners.

On second thought . . .

maybe growing up isn't such a bad thing afterall . . . .

Happy Remembering!

Sweet Shot of the Week

This picture was not taken recently but almost 9 years ago.

We were at a favorite park, and I took several shots that day of the boys on the play equipment.
This one, taken at a clubhouse, turned out the cutest.

Wilbur, peaking through the window, is not quite 1.
Orville, leaning on the wall, is not quite 2.

Homeschool Dawn, behind the camera and exhausted from chasing two little boys with a camera all day, is smiling and cherishing this simple but precious moment.

Thank you Darcy, at Life with My 3 Boybarians, for hosting Sweet Shot Day. Visit her blog to see more heart-warming pictures.

A Yellow and Blue Kitchen

After I left the hospital today, I had to go to Home Depot.

I only had Wilbur with me. Orville was with Michael, running other errands, and we were going to meet up at a local restaurant for dinner. I found what I needed quickly. I knew Michael would not be done yet, so I decided to kill a little time by looking through flooring samples.

Wilbur LOVES Home Depot. He flipped through every sample in the store until he found the flooring he wants in his future home. He is a hard wood man- solid hard wood in natural oak. He likes the light tone because it goes well with yellow, his favorite color. It seems he is set on having a house with yellow walls.

Then we made our way to the kitchen cabinets where there are several kitchen mock-ups. We walked from mini-kitchen to mini-kitchen, and he gave me the scoop on what he liked and didn't until we found IT. A Yellow and Blue Kitchen!

The wall was painted a really lovely shade of pale yellow, the cabinets were white, and the counter top was country blue. Wilbur exclaimed, "Now, this is MY style. When I grow up, this is the kitchen I want to have."

As he opened drawers and inspected the layout, noticing there was not a sink (he's a stickler for details), he talked about how he hoped God would send him a wife who likes yellow and blue. He went on and on about how it is his dream to provide for her and how happy it would make him to give her such a lovely place to work.

I was touched by it all and told him that I thought it was a nice vision and promised to pray that God would send him the wife that he needs.

Then he said, "Mom, I know I can't know for sure yet. But I have a good idea about who I may marry, and she likes yellow and blue, too. Best of all, you will really like her. She is your kind of girl. AND she goes to our church."

I will spare him the embarrassment of announcing over the internet the exact name of whom he dreams of marrying. We don't promote dating or boyfriends/girlfriends either, so I try to deal with those little boy dreams carefully.

But I smiled when he told me because she is my kind of girl.

And if it is God's will, I will dance on their wedding day.

We concluded, however, that we should not make any definite plans but would pray about the right woman being brought to him at the right time.

And whoever she is... she is going to have one very nice, yellow and blue kitchen. My son intends to make sure of it.

Going for Green

The Olympians are not the only ones celebrating victory this week.

Instead of gold, I won green. Unfortunately, no, not the kind of green that I could put in my savings account or use to buy something nice. My green victory is better than that and has been nine years in the making....

Imagine if you will, a young, twenty-something Homeschool Dawn seated near her darling Wilbur. He is a little-bitty baby, seated in his high chair, completely unaware of the new experience coming his way... his first taste of baby food.

Because HSD is a good mommy and loves her little boy, she is starting him out with peas- a green vegetable, of course, so he will not develop a taste for the sweeter fruits and veggies of other colors. She took this route with Orville only one year earlier, and it worked. As soon as the spoon of green mush touched his tongue, he said, "Mmmm... doh". Which was his way of saying, "Thanks, Mom, that was great. I appreciate that you are instilling healthy eating habits in me. Could I have some more, please?"

Strong in her conviction that introducing greens first produces a healthy eater, HSD scoops up a bite of peas, sings a little song about eating, and flies the spoon to Wilbur's mouth.

Wilbur's reaction?

Thwwwwpppp! (Which was his way of saying, "Thanks, Mom, for looking out for my nutritional needs, but yuck!")

Determined not to give in, HSD sings another eating song and "feeds" her little darling another bite.

Thwwwpppp!!

This went on until the jar was empty, HSD was covered in green spittle, and the kitchen was colored green from floor to ceiling. Yes, it was even on the ceiling. It was like a St. Patrick's Day celebration gone bad.

Well, I am a determined woman and have not given up the battle for the green. Tonight, I brought out my secret weapon.

And what, pray tell, is my secret weapon?

Ham pie.

I should have thought of this sooner. I never got Baby Wilbur to eat peas, green beans, or anything else green. But when I whipped open I jar of ham dinner... let's just say it was a good thing for me that he didn't have teeth yet. I might be missing a finger or two.

But back to my weapon....

I mixed together cubes of ham, swiss cheese, a little light mayo, carrots, onion, lemon juice, ground mustard, and CELERY! I poured it into a pie crust and baked it up. When I served it, Wilbur heard the words "ham", "cheese" and "pie" and inhaled it so quickly that our community tornado sirens sounded.

It wasn't until his tenth bite that he noticed the little green slivers within his slice of the yummy pie. He thought they were pickles, and I was not inclined to say differently.

Until dinner was over, that is.

Hee, hee.

Once his plate was clean, I told him exactly what he had eaten. His eyes widened and he exclaimed, "Hey! Celery is pretty good!"

He has promised that tomorrow night he will try....

Are you sitting down?

Zucchini!!

Touchdown!!!

Now, how can get him to turn off a light when he leaves a room?

Not Me Monday: Not MY Baby

My baby does not turn nine-years-old today. No way. I refuse to let this happen. I am not old enough to be the mother of a nine-year-old and will not admit that my youngest has reached sucn an age.

For weeks now, I have not thought about the day I learned my little surprise was on the way and wondered where the time has gone.

The picture above does not make me cry. He wasn't sucking his thumb during his ultrasound which did not cause everyone in the room that day to sigh in unison.

He wasn't a sweet baby, either. He never saw the beauty in anything.

As a little boy, he has not filled our house with joy, fun, and laughter.

So though I really don't know where the time has gone, I do know that I am blessed beyond measure to have shared nine years with such a sweet child. I look forward to the days ahead as my little boy grows to be a man.

Happy Birthday Wilbur!

You are so loved.
